Round Rug Size Guide for Pets: 24 vs 32 vs 40 Inches

By Fluffsome Team · October 17, 2026

Picking a pet rug size comes down to two questions: how much room your pet takes up when they flop down, and how much floor you have to spare. This round rug size guide compares the three sizes of our custom pet portrait rug, 24, 32 and 40 inches, with real-world measurements, a quick way to test each size on your floor at home, and honest advice on when the smaller rug is the better choice.

Round rug size guide: the three sizes at a glance

Round rugs are measured by diameter, straight across through the center. Here is how the three sizes compare, including how much floor each one actually covers.

Size Diameter Floor area (approx.) Price Good fit for
Small 24 in (61 cm) 3.1 sq ft $69 Cats, small dogs, tight spots
Medium 32 in (81 cm) 5.6 sq ft $85 Medium dogs, most bedrooms and living rooms
Large 40 in (102 cm) 8.7 sq ft $99 Large dogs, two pets, open rooms

One thing that surprises people: because a circle's area grows with the square of its width, the 40-inch rug covers almost three times the floor of the 24-inch one, even though it is "only" 16 inches wider. That also makes the large size the best value per square foot (roughly $11 per square foot, versus about $22 for the small).

How to choose the right pet rug size

Start with your pet, then check the space. Most people only need one of these steps to make up their mind.

Step 1: Measure your pet lying down

Wait until your pet is relaxed and lying in their usual position, then measure from the tip of the nose to the base of the tail. Stretched-out sleepers and curled-up sleepers need very different amounts of room.

  • Curled-up cats and small dogs usually fit comfortably on a 24-inch rug.
  • Medium dogs, or small dogs who sprawl, are happier on 32 inches.
  • Large dogs like retrievers and shepherds, especially ones who sleep fully stretched out, are best on 40 inches.

As a rule of thumb, pick a diameter a few inches longer than your pet's lying-down length if you actually want them to fit on it. Of course, a big dog will still try to squeeze onto the small rug. That is between you and the dog.

Step 2: Draw the circle on your floor

This is the most reliable trick for choosing any round rug size, and it takes five minutes:

  1. Cut a stringMake it half the diameter you are considering: 12 inches for the small, 16 for the medium, 20 for the large.
  2. Pin the centerHold one end on the floor where the center of the rug would go.
  3. Trace the circleWalk the other end around and mark the edge with painter's tape or a few books.
  4. Live with it for a dayWalk past it, open doors and drawers next to it, and see where your pet chooses to lie.

Step 3: Check the space around it

A round rug looks best with some bare floor around it. Leave room for doors to swing, chairs to pull out and drawers to open. If the circle you taped is touching walls or furniture on every side, size down.

Which size works where

24 inches

Beside the bed, in front of a crate, under a reading chair, by the back door or in a small apartment. A good choice for cats and as a decor piece.

32 inches

The all-rounder. Big enough to anchor a corner of the living room or the foot of a bed, small enough for most bedrooms.

40 inches

For a large dog's spot by the couch, an open living room, a home office floor or a rug that two pets share.

Pet rug size and the design itself

The size also affects how the portrait reads. Your design is scaled to the rug you choose, so a larger rug simply gives the portrait and any text more room to breathe.

  • Adding a name or a second line? Short names look great on all three sizes. If you want a longer name, a second line of text or a name all around the border, the larger sizes give text more space.
  • Two pets on one rug? We would suggest 32 or 40 inches so both faces stay large and clear. Mention both pets in the special request note.

When smaller is better

If the rug is mostly a gift or a decor piece, or it is going into a small apartment, the 24-inch is often the right call. A rug that fits the room will get used. A rug that blocks the closet will get rolled up.

Common round rug sizing mistakes

Most sizing regrets come from the same few mistakes. Avoid these and you will be happy with whatever you pick.

  • Measuring the pet standing up. Pets do not use rugs standing up. Measure them the way they actually sleep.
  • Forgetting the door swing. A rug by the front door or bedroom door needs to clear the door as it opens.
  • Buying for a puppy's current size. If your puppy will grow into a large dog, size for the adult dog, not the eight-week-old.
  • Squeezing it between furniture. A round rug that touches the sofa and the wall on every side looks cramped. A little bare floor around it helps the circle stand out.

If you are still torn between two sizes, think about where the rug will be in a year. Puppies grow, and furniture gets moved. When in doubt for a large dog, go bigger; when in doubt for a small space, go smaller. You can also read how ordering works, from your photo to the free preview to delivery.

Floors, backing and care

All three sizes have the same soft, plush pile and a non-slip backing that works on wood, tile and laminate. Care is the same too: vacuum regularly, spot clean with cool water and mild soap, gently hand-wash the surface when needed and air-dry it flat. Skip bleach, ironing and the hot dryer. Questions

What size round rug is best for a large dog?

For retrievers, shepherds and other large dogs, the 40-inch (102 cm) rug is usually best, especially if your dog sleeps stretched out. Measure your dog lying down from nose to base of tail and choose a diameter a bit longer than that.

Is a 24-inch rug big enough for a cat?

For most cats, yes. A curled-up cat fits comfortably on 24 inches (61 cm). If your cat loves to sprawl or shares the spot with another pet, consider 32 inches.

How do I visualize a round rug size before ordering?

Tie a string to a pencil or hold one end on the floor, make the string half the diameter (12, 16 or 20 inches) and trace a circle with painter's tape. Leave it for a day to see how it fits the room.

Will a round pet rug slide on hard floors?

All three sizes have a non-slip backing made for wood, tile and laminate floors, which helps the rug stay put when your pet flops down on it. Prices are $69 for 24 inches, $85 for 32 inches and $99 for 40 inches, with free US shipping.
